Illegal lenders cost Malaysians far more than money. These are the red flags to watch for, and how to verify any lender's licence in minutes.
Why this matters
Unlicensed lenders ("Ah Long") operate outside the Moneylenders Act 1951. That means no cap on what they charge, no written agreement protecting you, and no regulator to complain to. What starts as a small loan can spiral through arbitrary "penalties" — followed by harassment of you, your family and your employer.
Licensed vs illegal — the tell-tale differences
Put side by side, the difference is stark:

Red flags of an illegal lender
If you see any of these, walk away:
- Asks for an upfront "processing fee" or "deposit" before releasing the loan
- No physical office, no licence number, or refuses to show the licence
- Operates only through social media, WhatsApp or flyers on lamp posts
- Wants to hold your ATM card, bank login or IC as "collateral"
- Pressures you to sign blank or incomplete forms — or no agreement at all
How to verify a lender's licence
Every legal moneylender in Malaysia holds a licence issued by KPKT (the Ministry of Housing and Local Government). Check the company name and licence number against KPKT's official list (the i-PPW system), or call KPKT directly. A licensed lender will always put its licence number on its website, office signage and agreements — ours is B/2023/1234.
